The Business of Synchronicities
Right place, right time.
A phrase that rings true across time and culture.
Some call it luck, others call it coincidence.
Personally, I’ve experienced a variation of this quite a lot.
Specifically – right place, right time, right person.
Where I haven’t been actively looking for a specific person, but I’d put the intention out into the universe that I needed to find someone like them.
It almost feels like magic the way our paths cross at the perfect time.
Without any work being put in except intention.
When you quiet your mind, and follow that strange instinct to go somewhere or do something different… this sort of thing emerges.
Psychologist Carl Jung coined the term synchronicity in his later works.
He described it as chance occurrences or events that coincide in time and have meaningful significance to each other – yet they are acausal.
In other words, they have no causal relationship to each other. Rather than through cause and effect, these “coincidences” seem to manifest completely out of the blue.
In a lot of modern spirituality, and theories like the law of attraction, manifesting synchronicities is considered a learned skill.
And it’s something that I’ve been practicing in recent years.
Quieting the mind, in meditation and in daily life, is one of the most powerful things you can possibly learn.
It’s not just about controlling your emotional states, escaping the noise of your thoughts and anxieties.
It’s about reaching a point of mental silence, and listening.
Paying attention. Being in a state of awareness and presence in order to allow synchronicities to appear.
It’s when we’re in our analytical, rational mind that we don’t tap into the endless possibilities and infinite intelligence of the universe around us.
Quieting the mind allows us to surrender and let things unfold instead of trying to force them.
Here are just a few synchronicities I’ve experienced with The KINN this past year:
1. One day I had an impulse to walk to work instead of drive, and I happened to bump into an artist on the street that I knew from London.
We decided to get coffee, I showed her the KINN space, and she offered to commission art for us. We got several beautiful art pieces from that, which have become a cornerstone of our aesthetic.
2. Back when we first decided we wanted to offer KINN courses, I wanted to find someone who was the right fit to help us promote, but I didn’t know who it was going to be.
We hosted a film screening and ended up meeting Lucas through a mutual friend – who had just started an agency around helping others market courses.
We hit it off and went on to launch our flagship Public Speaking Course, and partnered together to start the Conscious Founders newsletter.
3. My mantra in 2023 was all about “being a pro” after I read the book Turning Pro by Steven Pressfield.
Every morning I would go back and re-read some of the chapters, repeating the mantra.
Shortly after that, through a series of unrelated events, we ended up confirming Steven to do one of our first podcasts with us live at the KINN.
4. A while back I went on a Raya date and she invited me out to a hike. On the hike I met Jerry, who’s also part of LA Tech Week. Jerry introduced me to Zack, who now partners on our Startup Cafe events on Wednesday mornings.
Not only that, these meetings led to our first event being at LA Tech Week, which helped bigtime to put us on the map.
5. The next was meeting Taylor, our membership manager, at an event. I couldn’t make it, but asked a team member Carina, to go in my place.
She ended up meeting Taylor, they chatted and hit it off, and it led to Taylor becoming a pivotal member of our team.
6. Another member, Terry Tillman, introduced me to his ex wife, an artist who loved what we were doing at the KINN.
She happens to be best friends with Ariana Huffington, who’s now going to connect us with Thrive Global (the $700M wellness brand) for another KINN event.
When you’re on the right path, things unfold at a faster rate than normal.
Historically in my life, without the practice of quieting my mind, surrendering, and listening rather than thinking, things were happening much slower.
The speed in which synchronicities are showing up in your life is a really good indication that you’re on the right path, but it can be almost overwhelming.
It’s crazy to think how things happened so quickly in a year — from an idea to where we are with the KINN today.
And I don’t think we’d be nearly as far along without the consistent flow of synchronicities happening every week.
It comes down to self-awareness and being present for these things to show up.
Creating enough space for them to appear.
The more you’re heads-down grinding on emails, the more you might miss it.
Because it’s not about stressing and forcing things.
It’s about surrendering. Letting go of thoughts and anxieties. Listening. Following those little intuitive impulses.
That’s how you tap into your power.
